BRAND HISTORY
Günter Schmid founded the company Auto Technisches Spezialzubehör (ATS) in Bad Dürkheim in the late 1960s. The company was a pioneer in the production of aluminum wheels for the aftermarket. In 1970, the first Wheels were produced using the advanced low-pressure casting process, which is now used throughout the industry. ATS's expertise, developed over more than 50 years, is primarily due to its development of wheels for motorsports. The brand has always been closely associated with this sport and, throughout its long history, has supplied numerous racing series and even ran its own Formula 1 team between 1977 and 1984. Since 2018, ATS has been part of the North American company Superior Industries.
ATS has consistently developed numerous applications proven in motorsport to meet the demands of everyday road use. Driving pleasure, aerodynamics, lightweight technologies, and sophisticated design were the main focus.
ENGAGEMENT IN MOTORSPORT
ATS was involved in motorsport from an early age: just eight years after its founding in 1969, the company went all in and entered the premier class of motorsport. Between 1977 and 1984, ATS competed in Formula 1 with its own racing team. Some well-known top drivers, such as Hans-Joachim Stuck and Gerhard Berger, raced for the team. This prestigious commitment, in particular, created an excellent foundation for the start of ATS's exemplary success story. For example, ATS was the official and sole Wheels supplier for, among others, the DTM, the ADAC Formula 4, and the W Series, a formula racing series for women launched in 2019.
